My Profile and Enviroment
In 1973, I came to America expecting greater exposure to its music.
After 13 years living in San Francisco, I moved to Concord located 30 miles away from San Francisco.
I enjoyed playing musical instruments such as the guitar, piano and drums, but was also interested in Japanese taiko durms.
In 1993, I was introduced to "San Francisco Taiko Dojo" through my friend. I took my son and daughter to visit the Dojo and soon they became the members of "SF Taiko Dojo Rising Stars Dream Team". Practices were held twice a week. That was over 4 hours of commute time every week! Now I think of it as an honor that Master Tanaka directly taught them the basics of how to play taiko.
At the same time, Concord's own Taiko Group, "Shinmu Taiko" was established. We didn't having anything to start off with and so we began by building our own taikos . After this, I built taikos for friends and for "Kagami-kai a rice pounding volunteer group.
My son was in charge of the marketing department of the "Taiko Conference" held in Sacramento California, Summer 2003, where pushed me to hold a booth to sell my taikos. This started my Taiko business. To have a deeper understanding of taiko making, I visited Mr. Ray Arifuku in Fresno who is also the sponsor of "Somei Yoshino". I also had opportunities to watch the taiko making at "Taiko Conference" in 2003, Mr. Miyoshi, "Miyoshi Daiko" demonstrated how to tighten the skin, and I visited the factory of "Miyamoto Taiko" in Japan as well. With these experiences and many failures, I came up with my own method of making Taikos.
To become the America's number one, the world's number one BARREL TAIKO MAKER , I am working to improve the sound quality, the appearance, and the strength of the taiko everyday.
I'm making efforts so more and more people can enjoy playing the taikos that I make.

私は1973年アメリカの音楽にあこがれて渡米しました。
サンフランシスに13年間を過ごし、1986年の春に現在済んでおります、サンフランシスコから約30マイルほど、北東にありますここコンコードに移ってきました。
元々ウエスターンドラムやギターの演奏が好きなうえ、和太鼓にも興味がありました。1993年サンフランシスコにあります「サンフランシスコ太鼓道場」に友人の子供たちが太鼓を習っていることを知り、長男と娘を連れて見学に行きました。子供たちは太鼓に興味を持ち、道場に通うようになりました。その後子供たちは「SF太鼓道場ライジングスター、ドリームチーム」に入り、週に一度の練習から、日曜日の練習にも参加するようになり、週に二度、往復2時間以上かけての練習通いが始まりました。今では田中先生から直々に教わったことを誇りに思います。
同じ頃コンコードにも太鼓のグループ「真夢（しんむ）太鼓」 が発足しました。何もないところからスタートのため、私たちは自分たちで先ず太鼓を作ることから始めました。 それが私が太鼓作りを始めたきっかけです。 その後は太鼓に興味のある友人や現在私もメンバーの一員であるもちつきのボランティアグループ 「鏡会」 パーフォーマンス用に少しずつ太鼓を作ってきました。
2003年の夏、加州サクラメントで 「太鼓コンフェレンス」 が開催された際、そのマーケット部門を担当した長男のすすめで私も太鼓のブースを出し、販売することとなりました。 これが私の太鼓ビジネスのスタートとなりました。 樽太鼓作りを本格的に始めるために、太鼓グループ 「そめい吉野」の太鼓のスポンサーであるフレズノ在住のレイ有福さんに作り方の教示を賜りました。2003年 「太鼓コンフェレンス」では、ミヨシさん 「Miyoshi Daiko」の「革張り」デモンストレイションを、日本を訪れた際には、 「宮本太鼓店」 にて太鼓作りを見学させていただきました。それらを参考にしてその後は自分なりの方法を見いだし、太鼓作りをしております。
現在はアメリカ一、世界一の樽太鼓メーカーを目指してよりよい「音色」、「美しさ」、「強度」を探求しながら、日々太鼓作りに励んでおります。樽で作られる長胴太鼓、平胴太鼓を中心に多くの方々に使っていただけるように努力してまいりたいと思っております。
